In Egypt, in 1984 and 1986, tens of thousands of textile workers struck against price hikes and for pay rises when the IMF forced through austerity measures to shore up a crisis-ridden economy.

Löner: real lönerna gick upp med runt 50% i den privata sektorn under perioden 1975-1985 medan lönerna i den offentliga sektorn gick upp med lite mer än 1/3. År 1990 hadde lönerna tvingats tillbaks till 1972´s nivåer och fortsatte krympa under 90-talets försa del. Reallönerna i tillverknings(manufakturing)industrin gick upp med 50% mellan 1975 - 1982 men tvingades även de ner med 40% åren 1985 - 1995. Inkomst klyftorna ökade kraftigt. De flesta hushållen blev bra mycket fattigare än tidigare.
