Rörelsen tar fart när  järnvägsarbetare strejkar mot sänkt lön i Martinsburg, West Virginia. Strejkerna spred sig snabbt längs järnvägen och till andra branscher. Man ockuperade järnvägarna. Ibland drev man produktion efter eget huvud och egna syften. Ibland förstörde man vagnar och lokomotiv. Vid flera tillfällen ställde sig soldater och poliser på arbetarnas sida. I St.Louis styrde arbetarrådet en kort period. ”Let the clashing of arms be heard. We shall conquer, or we shall die”. Företagarna tvingades till eftergifter men upproret krossades med våld då hundratals arbetare mördades av trogna militärer, poliser och vita garden. </ins></div></td></tr>
