World Briefing | Europe: Britain: Postal Disruption

Published: October 31, 2003

Wildcat postal strikes spread across England and Scotland with a huge backlog accumulating in London, where an estimated 16 million items a day are being held up. The Royal Mail advised customers not to post letters in central London, and mailboxes there were being sealed to stop people from trying. Talks between the Royal Mail and its unions disagreed on what the actions were about. Labor leaders said workers were angry at forced changes in working conditions while postal service heads said London workers were agitating to get pay increases to reflect higher costs of living in the capital.
